Course Description Course Outline Other
In the book Dreamland, Sam Quinones weaves an extraordinary story of the personal journeys of the addicted, the drug traffickers, law enforcement, and scores of families affected by the epidemic, as he details the social, economic, and political forces destroying communities all over America.

NOTES: 18 Hours $89 Book not available electronically

  • Participants will increase their understanding of the history of the opiate epidemic in America.
  • Participants will gain an understanding of the nature of the epidemic by following three primary stories:
  • 1. The unfettered prescribing of pain medications during the 1990s that reached its peak in Purdue Pharma’s campaign to market OxyContin, its new, expensive, and extremely addictive miracle painkiller.
  • 2. A massive influx of black tar heroin that is cheap and potent, and originating from one small county on Mexico’s west coast, Xalisco, Nayarit. Independent of a drug cartel, small town and mid-sized cities across the country are assaulted by a brilliant, almost unbeatable, marketing and distribution system.
  • 3. Hope in the same rust belt river town--Portsmouth, Ohio--where townspeople are turning away from dependence and toward economic and municipal self-reliance, and with that, recovery.
